Włodek Pawlik’s live performance for piano and tape accompanying the screening of “The Polish Dancer” will open this year’s Silent Movie Festival. The pianist, praised and recognized with multiple awards in Poland and abroad, is not only one of the biggest names in Polish jazz, but also the author of numerous critically acclaimed film scores, including to Borys Lankosz’s “Rewers,” Dorota Kędzierzawska’s “Time to Die,” and Peter Greenaway’s “Nightwatching.” During a solo appearance at Kino Iluzjon, Pawlik will perform a piece that is equal parts precisely arranged composition and spontaneous improvisation.
Włodek Pawlik garnered international recognition in 2014 when “Night in Calisia,” an album he recorded with Randy Becker and the Kalisz Philharmonic Orchestra, received the Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album. The Grammy, however, was neither the first or the last award in Pawlik’s career. The classically-trained multi-instrumentalist and composer also has two Koryfeusz Polish Music Prizes and two Fryderyk Awards under his belt. Pawlik’s work was also highly praised in professional trade magazines, including “Down Beat,” and online industry portals, such as “All About Jazz.”
