The most recent Drekoty LP opens with the words - “I am calm/so close to the middle.” It may seem misleading, insofar as the work of Ola Rzepka, Natalia Pikuła, and Olga Czech could ever be described as the “music of the middle.” The trio, established in 2011, keenly flirts with pop but a form thereof that we might as well call deconstructed pop, one that eagerly juxtaposes beautiful vocal harmonies with electronically-generated glitches and noises. Although the band continues to elude traditional genre classification, it quickly managed to garner widespread critical acclaim. Drekoty’s 2012 debut, “Persentyna,” was very well received and found itself in the top of many music critics’ end-of-the-year lists. The band performed live with Carla Bozulich, the band Pustki, and Julia Marcell, and appeared at the most important music festivals in Poland, including Open’er Festival and OFF Festival. Three years after releasing their debut effort, the trio returned to the studio to record “Nowe Konstelacje,” an EP dominated with striking covers of Grzegorz Ciechowski’s songs.
Drekoty’s most recent album, “lub maszyna dzika trawa,” was released in February of 2018. The album, recorded with the musicians playing together in single takes, features a number of guest appearances by pre-eminent musicians, including the saxophonist Mikołaj Trzaska, the trumpeter Antoni Gralak, guitarist Raphael Rogiński, and harpist Katarzyna Kolbowska. In the last week of February, the band launched a nationwide tour promoting their latest LP. The band will return to the studio immediately after the tour concludes to score the 1917 film “When the Heart Burns With Hate.”
