Albert Karch & Jędrzej Łagodziński
Saxophonist Jędrzej Łagodziński and drummer Albert Karch belong to Poland’s most interesting and captivating jazz scenes. In an interesting twist, the scene is exterritorial because both musicians are currently enrolled at the Copenhagen Rytmisk Musikkonservatorium. Along with a couple of their fellow students, Łagodziński and Karch have been recording widely acclaimed records with bands such as Pimpono Ensemble, LOVE, and Franciszek Pospieszalski Sextet. The aforementioned albums have been released by Love & Beauty Music, a label established by circles associated with the two musicians, For Tune, and the Slovakian label Hevhetia.
The albums that Łagodziński and Karch have contributed their efforts to are very diverse, but all are linked by a common thread of a powerful rhythm section and a creativity seemingly unbridled by traditional genre classifications. Although both instrumentalists tend to consider jazz and improv as a starting point for their efforts, they are equally eager to explore other genres, including electronic music, avant-garde, post-rock, and even classical music.
As a drummer, Karch is particularly interested in broadening and enriching the means of expression at his disposal. Clear sound, however, continues to serve as his greatest and most powerful inspiration. Łagodziński keenly blends freestyle improvisation with long-form compositions. Fascinated with the more spiritual varieties of jazz, he’s been known to give deathly exhausting four-hour-long sax performances.
The duo will perform twice during the Silent Movie Festival. They’ll open Friday night, performing a live scoring of “I Don’t Want to Be a Man,” and on Sunday will present their original score to “The Abyss.” Additionally, Albert Karch will perform original solo improvisations to accompany a number of short films about dance preceding the aforementioned screenings.
