Bastarda
Bastarda is the name of a Renaissance font that combines various lettering styles. It is also one of the most compelling chamber ensembles on the Polish music scene, formed by three virtuosos—Paweł Szamburski, Tomasz Pokrzywiński, and Michał Górczyński—playing clarinet, cello, and the rarely heard contrabass clarinet. One could say it's a true power group, as each of the musicians is involved in an altogether unimaginable number of other projects. As Bastarda alone, they have released 10 albums since 2017. In the latest one, titled XB, the group delves into the most iconic musical themes of the Polish post-war film era. Earlier, Bastarda’s music referred to musical traditions from various parts of the world (Portugal, Lithuania, Belarus) or medieval-Renaissance polyphony, as well as the tradition of Central European Hasidic music.
The group will perform in acts IV-VI of the second part of Dr. Mabuse titled Inferno. The members of Bastarda represent a very distinct kind of virtuosity that is devoid of the need for individual prominence but rather facilitates storytelling through music. This is an ensemble incredibly conscious of their musical craft, also possessing a unique ability: the quieter they play, the more attentively they are listened to.
