A gripping courtroom drama reminiscent of Sidney Lumet's Twelve Angry Men, filmed nearly 40 years later. Here, too, one person tries to convince an entire jury that the boy accused of murder is innocent. Interestingly, the film's main character is the first woman to serve on a jury in the US, although women were not actually allowed to serve in this capacity until 1927. A Woman Under Oath is one of John Stahl's earliest feature-length films. He was a Hollywood producer and director who specialised in dramas and melodramas. He was one of the founders of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1927.
The Woman Under Oath is the only film in the programme for this year's Silent Cinema Celebration, which will be screened from 35mm film, specially imported from the British Film Institute’s Archives.
