Robinson Crusoe
(Star Film Company, France, 1902)
dir., script: Georges Méliès, based on the novel The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe
cast: Georges Méliès (Robinson Cruzoe), André Deed
DCP, 13’; hand-coloured; restored 2011; source: La Cinémathèque française
Following a shipwreck, Robinson Crusoe ends up stranded on a desert island. After freeing Friday from the hands of the native islanders, he and his new companion then embark on a series of adventures, including braving a hurricane. Many years later, they rescue a ship’s captain and his officers from a mutiny, who, in turn, show their gratitude by inviting both men on board.
The restoration of the film in 4K was undertaken in 2011 by La Cinémathèque française and Eclair Laboratoires from an original hand-painted 35 mm print held in the collection of Olivier Auboin-Vermorel.
